If you've decided to use epoxy for your top coat, apply and mix it as you would your color coat. If you chose polyurethane for your topcoat instead of epoxy, the addition and mixing of anti-slip additive is the same, but the application process is slightly different. Note: Keep in mind that the coverage rate of the first coat of polyurethane or epoxy finish will be less on a colored flake floor. After mixing is complete, the polyurethane is poured into a paint tray and one person can begin cutting along the walls with the chip brush while a second person rolls the floor out of the paint tray. Roll the polyurethane after making a small section, as you would with epoxy. One coat upon one coat of color flakes is not sufficient, as polyurethane has a dry film thickness of 2-3 mils.

What is a 100% solid epoxy coating?

When coatings are applied, two thickness measurements are taken. Percent solid refers to the percentage of coating thickness that remains after the coating has finished drying, or the difference between WFT and DFT. The 100% solid epoxy coating will maintain the same level of thickness between the time it is applied and the time it has dried, hence the name 100% solid. There are three main types of epoxy coating: 100% solid epoxy coating, water-based epoxy coating, and solvent-based epoxy coating. Unlike two-component 100% solids epoxy coatings, water-based epoxy coatings only contain about 40% to 60% epoxy. Solvent-based epoxy coatings are slightly stronger, thicker, and may be more durable. The 100% solid epoxy coating is the strongest and most durable of these three. 100% solid epoxy coatings are commonly used in professional garages for their ability to withstand hot tires, scratches, oil and chemical spills.
